We generally look for positive things to post, but this review has to go in the category of "warning."
Many video rental stores are going out of business, Netflix ads are everywhere, and the world of dvd rental is changing. One new feature in our area is the placement of MovieCube DVD rental kiosks in place of the former small video rental counter at our local grocery store.
The idea isn't bad. For $1 per day, you rent the movie of your choice from the kiosk using your credit card. Supposedly no lines, no waiting, and no problems.
Well ... the first time we tried to return a video, there was a customer in front of us who was having trouble renting the title he wanted. Not really MovieCube's fault that it took an extra 30 minutes out of my day to wait on the customers to finally give up and let me return my dvd's. However, in only a handful of rental occasions, I've had my own share of MovieCube glitches. One required me to stay on the phone for about 20 minutes in order to get permission to return my dvds without processing them through the machine, which was malfunctioning. And as an aside, you can't take very long to debate your choices. If you pause to read the movie descriptions for approximately 30 seconds, the machine resets and you lose the movies you saved. And I will add that, when I just now visited their web page in order to make this post and provide accurate information, I was redirected to a site that warned me that "I could have a virus" that tried to install a free "repair" function on my computer without permission. I killed the window and for that reason I'm not posting a link to their site here. None of us needs more spyware or adware.
All of these are somewhat minor inconveniences and problems that could be expected to be worked out in time. However, the one that really bothered me is that one of the videos that I returned after keeping it out for a single day showed up as a $37+ bill on my debit card with no notice a couple of weeks later. I called the MovieCube, and after being on the phone for about 25 minutes, was finally told that they had confirmed that I had returned the movie as I claimed, and they would forward a memo to their credit department to issue a credit on my account. (Incidentally, the customer service rep scolded me for not letting them know sooner that there was a problem, which I found amusing since there was no problem until they charged me for a movie I didn't keep. However, the other customer service reps I have spoken to have been most helpful and courteous.)
Some time passed, and the charge remained on my debit account. So I called them again. Another 20 minutes, this time billed by the minute, and now I have a confirmation number that is supposed to assure me that they will put the money back into my account, but they said it might take almost 4 weeks to do so. It has been a couple of weeks, and no sign of my money yet. This has been a great disappointment to me, that the money was removed from a debit account with no warning, by their error, not rectified, and left over Christmas. Thankfully I didn't get within $40 of a zero balance on that account, or I would have incurred bounced check charges in addition to all of this.
So, it is with regret that I felt I had to inform my readers that, if you want to be a savvy shopper, you may want to avoid MovieCube dvd rental, at least until they get these quirks worked out.

After renting a movie, the machine was not working when I tried to return the movie. I called customer service for instructions to return the movie. I followed their instructions and was given a confirmation number that the movie was returned on time. However a late fee was applied to by account. I have called again to get a credit, and waiting to see what happens.
Buyers beware; they are thieves; most of the time, their machine doesn't work and if you are tying to return, you are then charged for additional days and your bill get very high! Please, please, trust me, ytou save money by going to your local Blockbusters; Their 1.99$ is a lie and they don't tell you every details of how much you are really being charged... upfront.
BEWARE THEY ARE THIEVES!!!!!!!!!!!
movie cube is a rip-off and i would not use it ever again. i returned 2 movies into a broken machine (like the blogger i had to call the company to get "authorization" to do so) about 2 weeks later i noticed that they were charging me almost $80 (i rented 2 movies for about 5 days each... when i called their customer service they told me i should have called sooner (i called the day the charge showed up) and they told me an inventory would have to be taken to make sure the movies were returned. i was told the credit should appear in 15 days. 1 MONTH LATER i was still dealing with customer service at which time they told me that they didn't show on their system that the movies had been returned. They also told me no one physically goes to the lock box so I am not sure how the movies get from the lock box to the machine but at anyrate they have their movies and my $80.
Same happened to me. Dont use ths company. The machine was broken, I could not return it for weeks and then I put it in their lock box and they told me it was not there. i got charged for a movie and I dont even have it. Thieves!
I have to say that the three times I've used MovieCube, I have had no problems with their service. Last night, we did receive a movie that simply refused to play past a certain point, despite having no blemishes on the play face. Customer service was responsive and promised to charge back my card.
I will agree though that the browse time is too short and that the length of time it takes to process returns and rentals is quite long. Additionally, their prices have always been what they promised, $1 a day plus tax. All in all, my experience has been positive.
Movicube is a SCAM and FRAUD!!!
They advertise a 1-day rental but they charge for 2 days even if it is less than 24 hours period. My credit card was incorectly charged and it took more than 30 minutes just to contact someone from their customer service. Their response: Customers should read carefully the fineprint.
At the time of rental, no recepit or a note of a due date was given.
DO NOT RENT FROM MovieCUBE, this is a very, very dirty business practice!!!
I live in Antioch, TN, and I had a similar experience. I had rented a few movies from the Moviecube using my 2 debit cards at different times.
One day, while I was at work, and several weeks later, I noticed that new charges came up in my bank accounts! One was $22.94 the other was I think more than that. I called the company but the rude girl on the other end hung up on me. When I finally got someone to speak to, he kept me on hold for a long time I had to hang up. Both cases are now being disputed through my banks. I will soon post an article on the web regarding this fraudulent activity. I think bad publicity is what moviecube needs, and I will give it to them.
Moviecube is a fraud!
Similar return nightmare still just starting with me. I rented a movie that I was returning. My 1 year old son was with me, asleep of course in the car. Thinking, I could be in and out and the DVD box was by the door, I locked my son in the car, at the curb, right by the door to Alberson?, Anyway...
...I run inside and try to return the movie. No luck, cannot find any instruction, no phone numbers here I could see. I ask someone at the store what they knew about it, nothing. Finally, in despiration with the time this is taking, I gave my movie to the customer service rep. I asked them, if they would be kind enough to return the movie for me, once they could get it working. I told them my son was out front asleep.
I figured at least the movie would be in the store. This was a few days ago. I was planning on going up there tomorrow to make sure it was returned.
Tonight, I have been billed on my credit card...
DVD RENTAL MOVIECUBE HOUSTON TX US with Card... -37.80
Rediculous. Stupid on my part about assuming it would be taken care of, but it was a manager, and it appears here that it doesnt matter if you return it on time or not, you still get shafted.
Sounds like some trouble needs to be made for these folks. Sadly for them, this just happened to the wrong person. I'll fix em tomorrow.
I will try to remember this site and let you know how it goes. I'll get my cash back and then some.
These PUNKS are going to get what they deserve.
the same happened to me, i called to report the machine was not allowing me to return three movies, I called, they gave me the instructions to drop it off in the box located in the back of the machine. not 14 days later, my back a charge of $113.67 for these movies, i call to complaint and they say they found the movies but they can only give me credit for $90!! they also told me they noted my account that i rejected their offer!! Unbelievable. I won't stop until this gets resolved
I accidentally returned Redbox movies into a moviecube kiosk and when I called moviecube to get my movies back they basically told me to bad. Theives!!! I hope they go out of business. They are horrible. This is costing me at least 80.00 for the movies they stole from me!
My experience was I rented 3 movies for 1 night. returned them the next night . Should have cost me 3 dollars right. waited 2 weeks for the charge to come through and then they charged me 18 dollars!!
called them up and the girl was very helpful at least as much as she could, but it was going to cost me 6 dollars for the movies anyway becaus e they were charging for movies again that i had rented 6 months before. Worst of all they overdrew my account and I had to pay a 25 dollar NSF fee.
Hate to add another "same thing happened to us..." but it did. We got a $35 charge for a movie that was returned. They said they will refund the money, but I will only give them to the end of the week.
After that I will dispute the charge on my card, and get in contact with the BBB.
